Simon Mignolet’s Liverpool future appears to be coming to an end after Jurgen Klopp hinted he would stick with Lloris Karius in goal for their Champions League tie with Porto.
The Belgium international has lost his status as Liverpool’s No.1 goalkeeper in the Premier League to Karius in the last few weeks and already suggested he would have to consider his time at the club if things do not change.
Liverpool travel to Portugal for the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 knockout tie with Porto on Wednesday and Klopp has hinted Karius will be the club’s first choice goalkeeper in all competitions from now on.
“To be honest I have not made the final decision but it is not the same situation as it was,” The Guardian quote Klopp as saying ahead of Wednesday’s game. “A good one will play. But I haven’t made a decision so far,”
Klopp has struggled to find a reliable goalkeeper he can trust since becoming Liverpool manager and they are already being linked with summer moves for the likes of Jan Oblak and Alisson.
However, Karius is determined to prove his credentials to Klopp over the remainder of the season and there has certainly been an improvement in his performances in recent matches.
Of goalkeepers that have made at least 15 Premier League appearances this season, only Joe Hart (56.7%) has a worse save success rate than Mignolet (59%).
Furthermore, since joining Liverpool in the summer of 2013, Mignolet has committed the most errors that have directly led to an opposition goal in the Premier League (13).
