WhoScored's European Team of the Week: Maddison one of two Tottenham players to feature
Inter are the dominant side in the European Team of the Week following their resounding win at Verona on Saturday. Tottenham, Gladbach, PSG, Monaco, Liverpool, Girona and Bayer Leverkusen are also represented in the XI.
Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham) – 8.15
Tottenham were dealt a blow on Monday when it was confirmed that starting goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario broke his ankle in Saturday’s 4-0 win at Manchester City. That he played for an hour with the issue is impressive in itself as he earned a WhoScored rating of 8.15 at the Etihad Stadium having made five saves and three high ball claims.
Marvin Friedrich (Gladbach) – 8.36
Marvin Friedrich provided his first assist of the season as Gladbach claimed a 2-0 win over St. Pauli on Sunday afternoon. That assist for Alassane Plea’s opener came from his only key pass, while six aerial wins, one last man tackle and a 97.7% pass success rate from 87 passes saw the 28-year-old land a WhoScored rating of 8.36.
Stefan de Vrij replaced Francesco Acerbi after 15 minutes in Inter’s 5-0 win at Verona on Saturday and was excellent at the heart of the defence following his first half introduction. Indeed, the Dutchman scored Inter’s fourth on the half hour mark, while 132 accurate passes, a record in a Serie A match this season, helped De Vrij to a WhoScored rating of 8.62.
Rounding off the backline is PSG youngster Beraldo, who earned a WhoScored rating of 8.28 in Friday’s 3-0 win over Toulouse. Beraldo scored his first league goal of the season in the home triumph, and was key in a clean-sheet attaining display, making three clearances, two tackles and one interception in the victory.
Maghnes Akliouche (Monaco) – 9.10
Monaco returned to domestic duties with an entertaining 3-2 home win over Brest on Friday night, with winger Maghnes Akliouche earning the Player of the Match award with a WhoScored rating of 9.10. The 22-year-old scored his first and second league goals of the season against Brest, netting with two of three shots, and worked tirelessly off the ball as he made six tackles and three interceptions.
Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool) – 8.92
Dominik Szoboszlai scored his first league goal of the season to set Liverpool on their way in their eventual 3-2 win at Southampton on Sunday. Szoboszlai struck with one of five shots, and was unfortunate not to register an assist having made three key passes. An additional two successful dribbles saw the Hungary international land a WhoScored rating of 8.92.
James Maddison (Tottenham) – 9.08
Partnering Szoboszlai in the middle of the park is the second Tottenham representative in the European Team of the Week. James Maddison enjoyed a birthday to remember as he netted twice in Spurs’ 4-0 win at Manchester City, getting the better of Ederson with both shots, while the 28-year-old also drew five fouls and made two tackles on his way to a WhoScored rating of 9.08.
Bryan Gil continued his good form as Girona eased to a 4-1 home win over Espanyol. The Spanish winger was directly involved in three of four goals at the weekend, netting with his only shot and providing a brace of assists from three key passes to feature with a WhoScored rating of 9.13.
With a WhoScored rating of 9.83, Joaquin Correa is the European Player of the Week. The Argentine marked his first league start of the season in style having netted with one of three shots and provided a brace of assists from three key passes. Correa’s performance was the best rated in a Serie A match this season.
Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen) – 9.79
Spearheading the attack in the European Team of the Week is Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick, who maximised a rare start to down FC Heidenheim. The Czech hitman bagged a hat-trick from six shots and won three aerial duels in Saturday's 5-2 win to feature with a WhoScored rating of 9.79.
The third Inter representative rounds off the XI with Marcus Thuram good value for his inclusion with a WhoScored rating of 9.62. Thuram was directly involved in three of Inter’s five goals against Verona, scoring his eighth and ninth goals of the season from two shots and providing one assist with his only key pass.
