Manchester United made late move for Dortmund signing Brandt

Manchester United made a late approach for Borussia Dortmund signing Julian Brandt, claims the Manchester Evening News.

Dortmund signed Brandt from Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday after triggering his €25m release clause.

Brandt had previously been linked with a move to Tottenham and Liverpool but it has now emerged United were keen on the 23-year-old.

United enquired to Leverkusen about Brandt’s future only to discover the Germany international had elected to join Dortmund.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bolster his wide options this summer, particularly on the right, and viewed Brandt as a potential signing, even with Swansea starlet Daniel James expected to sign in the coming weeks.

Dortmund teenager Jadon Sancho was United’s first choice target but that deal is off the table after the club missed out on a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Brandt registered more key passes (86) than any other player in the Bundesliga this season.
