Gladbach beat Tottenham to Borussia Dortmund defender

Borussia Dortmund have announced they have reached an agreement with Bundesliga rivals Gladbach for the sale of Matthias Ginter.

The 23-year-old, who has just returned from helping Germany win the Confederations Cup in Russia, has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham this summer.

However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have lost out in the race to sign the versatile defender after Gladbach struck a deal with Dortmund for a reported €17m (£14.9m) fee plus add-ons.

“Matthias Ginter came to us and expressed his desire to leave due to the competition for places in defence,” Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told the club’s official website.

“We decided to grant him that wish. We would like to thank him expressly for his commitment at BVB and wish him nothing but the best for his future professional endeavours.”

Ginter, who has spent the last three years with Dortmund, has agreed terms to a four-year contract with Gladbach and the transfer will be finalised pending a medical examination.

Dortmund won 75% of the league matches Ginter didn’t start last season compared to a win rate of less than half (46.2%) when he was named in the starting XI.
