Wanyama first to reach unwanted Premier League milestone
Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama became the first player to be sent off three times in the Premier League this season after being shown his marching orders midway through their encounter with West Ham on Saturday evening.
Wanyama, 24, was shown a straight red card by referee Mark Clattenburg for a challenge on Dimitri Payet less than 10 minutes into the second half.
The Kenya international’s ill-discipline will come as a concern for Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, even though his team managed to hang on to their 1-0 lead and claim all three points to maintain their five-game unbeaten run.
Wanyama has now been sent off six times in his British career, having already picked up three red cards during his two years with Celtic. Southampton have also been shown more red cards than any other team in the Premier League this season (4).
Moreover, he has now been sent off at least two more times than any other player in the league having already been sent off in the 1-0 defeat to Norwich and their 2-0 win against Bournemouth earlier in the season, furthering his statistically calculated weakness of 'discipline'.
