Icardi could be stripped off captaincy

Inter vice president Javier Zanetti has revealed Mauro Icardi could be stripped of the captaincy following his ‘unacceptable’ comments.

Icardi, 23, faced the wrath of the Inter ultras during their shock 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari on Sunday after a chapter in his book revealed he lied about things to make himself look better compared to the fans in 2015.

The Argentine striker was made captain by former manager Roberto Mancini at the start of last season but has endured a turbulent few months after appearing to push for a move to Napoli in the summer before signing a new contract earlier this month.

“Will we be taking action? Unfortunately yes,” Zanetti told Mediaset Premium, via Football Italia. “We cannot accept this behaviour from a person who works for our club. After this match we will talk things over and see what happens.

“Will we remove the captain’s armband? We’ll talk about it later, but this is an issue not just for Icardi, but for everyone who is part of the club. Behaviour must be in line with the values of the history of Inter.”

Since the start of last season Icardi has scored at least 13 more goals than any other player in Serie A (22).
