Tottenham defender set to miss league opener

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to be without a recognised right back for their Premier League opener with Kieran Trippier likely to miss out with an ankle injury, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Pochettino’s side are still waiting for swelling to go down before being able to fully examine the extent of Trippier’s ankle injury, which he sustained in their final pre-season match of the summer against Juventus last weekend.

Tottenham remain optimistic Trippier has avoided serious damage but there are still concerns he could be out for a number of weeks, which only increases the club’s need to sign another right back following Kyle Walker’s move to Manchester City last month.

Valencia defender Joao Cancelo and Porto full back Ricardo Pereira remain targets for Tottenham but there won’t be any new arrivals before Saturday’s game away to Newcastle and Pochettino is now short of a genuine right back.

Eric Dier has experience playing in that position, while Moussa Sissoko replaced Trippier against Juventus in a right wing back position at the weekend.

Only Cesc Fabregas registered an assist more frequently in the Premier League last season (1 every 110.6 minutes of action) than Trippier (every 113.2 minutes of action).
