Inter free to move for Liverpool midfielder

Liverpool have given Inter the green light to press ahead with a move for Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva, reports The Guardian.

Lucas is Liverpool’s current longest standing player having been at the club since 2007, but has barely featured under Jurgen Klopp this season unless injuries have forced the managers hand.

The 29-year-old has only started three league games this season, all of which have come at centre-back. With Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip Klopp’s first choice pairing, and Ragnar Klavan the first reserve, options will be limited for Lucas in a Liverpool side that is without European football this season.

The Brazilian midfielder is now free to speak with Inter ahead of a temporary loan deal until the end of the season, with Liverpool willing to let the player leave if he wants to make the move to Italy next month.

Inter are interested in signing a new defensive midfielder following Gary Medel’s long-term injury, with former Chelsea midfielder Lass Diarra, now of Marseille, also on their radar.

Since 2009/10 Lucas has completed more tackles in the Premier League than any other player (791).
