Liverpool goalkeeper hits out at club

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet insists he still wants to leave the club despite the departure of Loris Karius.

Mignolet was heavily linked with a move away from Anfield this summer after falling out of favour under Jurgen Klopp.

The Belgium international lost his place in the team to Loris Karius midway through last season before the club spent more than £60m to sign Alisson from Roma in the summer.

Mignolet would have been third choice this season but has since been promoted as Alisson’s back-up in the wake of Karius’ departure to Besiktas on Saturday.

Liverpool were only willing to let one of their back-up goalkeepers leave this summer and Karius’ transfer means Mignolet will have to stay at the club, much to his anger.

“The transfer of Karius doesn’t change anything for me,” he told Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws. “I have always been clear: I want to play.

“Being number two or number three makes little difference. Playing minutes is the most important thing.

“Nobody has said anything to me after the departure of Loris. So I don’t know what my future at Liverpool is. We will see what happens this week.”

Of goalkeepers that made at least 10 appearances in the Premier League player season, only Heurelho Gomes (57%) and Joe Hart (57.6%) had worse save success rates than Mignolet (59%).
