Ligue 1 Team of the Month: Neymar dazzles in September

Thomas Tuchel has started his reign as Paris Saint-Germain manager with eight wins from eight in Ligue 1, opening up an eight-point lead at the top of the table. PSG won their September matches by an aggregate scoreline of 18-4, scoring at least three goals in all five outings.

Neymar has been handed a new role in the team by Tuchel, moving from a wide left position to a central berth behind the lone striker. The Brazilian isn’t completing as many dribbles as he did last season, but he is as effective in front of goal. Neymar has played a direct hand in nine goals in seven league appearances, scoring four goals in as many outings in September.

No Ligue 1 player scored more goals than Neymar last month, while he also ranked in the top-10 for dribbles (15) and key passes (10). Not only that, but the 26-year-old completed the most through balls (5) and won the joint-most fouls (16). The PSG No.10 unsurprisingly finished September as the highest WhoScored rated player in Ligue 1 (8.36).

Edinson Cavani, like Neymar, is also scoring at a goal-a-game rate, netting five times from as many league appearances. The 31-year-old raked up four of those in September, while also providing an assist in a 4-0 win over Saint-Etienne midway through the month. The Uruguay international garnered a WhoScored rating of 7.96, finished as the second highest WhoScored rated player in Ligue 1.

Rounding off the top three rated Ligue 1 players for September is Lyon forward Bertrand Traore (7.87). The Chelsea academy graduate was largely helped by a perfect WhoScored 10 performance in a thrilling 4-2 victory over Marseille, where he netted twice. Not only that, but the 23-year-old weighed in with seven tackles on the right wing, while also winning three aerial duels and completing two dribbles.

While the aforementioned trio flourished in the month of September, as well as the other eight players in our Team of the Month, the same cannot be said for Dijon teenager Enzo Loiodice. The 17-year-old failed to record a WhoScored rating above 6 in any of his three starts and his month finished with a red card in a 3-0 defeat at home to Lyon. The defensive midfielder made seven tackles and two interceptions across the three matches but it was a month to forget for the rookie. Of Ligue 1 players that made at least three appearances in September, Loiodice gained the lowest WhoScored rating (5.67).
