Match Report: Things Clicking for Klopp as Mourinho's Clock Tocks

Mourinho was a man of very few words in his post-match conference after his side succumbed to their sixth loss in the league and in turn their third consecutive defeat.

But his feelings were clear enough to divulge, showing a clear annoyance towards the match officials. Reluctant to openly criticise the decisions that he felt went against him in fear of further punishment from the FA, Mourinho posed an exasperated figure as the pressure continues to mount on his position at the club.

It was a rosy start for Mourinho as Ramires beat Alberto Moreno to the ball at the back post, to power home a deflected cross from César Azpilicueta following some neat work on Liverpool's right flank. A goal within the first few minutes may have been the perfect remedy to settle the pre-match anxiety around the ground, but the visitors soon found their feet and started to dictate proceedings.

Liverpool have only won once when they have gone behind in a league match since the start of 2014/15 but Jürgen Klopp's side put on an emphatic display to ameliorate that statistic. Liverpool have been playing with an added resilience and belief in the short time that thier new coach has taken over.

Klopp’s philosophy was personified as Liverpool regained possession high up in the pitch in stoppage time. Coutinho was able to manufacture an extra yard as his curled a wonderful attempt beyond Begovic.

The Brazilian had failed to find the net in his previous 44 shots in the league, and signs of frustration were starting to become apparent. But the player, who fans call the magician, showed his relief, celebrating with the ball under his shirt in tribute to the fact that he and his partner are expecting their first child.

The visitors started the second half as they ended the first, though it took the introduction of Christian Benteke to really put the wheels in motion. The Belgian knocked down a cross-field ball from Sakho, towards Coutinho; fainting to shoot, he wrapped his boot around the ball and a nick off Terry took his effort past Begovic for the second time in the match.

There's usually no shortness of controversy in matches between the two clubs. Mourinho was most aggrieved by the fact that Lucas Leiva was present on the pitch. The holding midfielder was fortunate not to see a second yellow as he tripped Ramires. Mark Clattenburg deemed the challenge not worthy of a card, which was met with a hysterical reaction from Mourinho.

Mourinho, though, made no mention of what surely was a red card offence involving Diego Costa, as the feisty striker kicked out at Martin Skrtel prior to the Lucas incident.

Lucas could also count himself rather fortunate after being dispossessed by Oscar close to the halfway line. The 24-year-old audaciously attempted to lob Simon Mignolet, who back pedalled just in time to deflect his effort wide.

One element often present in Klopp's team though is his direct approach. Chelsea struggled to deal with a long ball up to Benteke again, Jordon Ibe found the striker in the box shortly after and the Belgian showed composure to slot in the third goal to send the away support in raptures. It was the substitute's fourth goal for the club, with the £32m centre forward starting to prove his worth despite a number of injury problems to date.

In the previous 4 meetings between these two managers, it was Mourinho who averaged 60.4% possession when their clubs met, however, Klopp’s side retained the ball for 56.1% of the match at Stamford Bridge, exhibiting their dominance.

From the touchline, Klopp still emphasised details such as the need to move the ball quicker, distributing the ball to wide areas and regaining formation when dispossessed. He will however, be more than emphatic to record his first league win of the season. On the other hand, Mourinho will have to find a way to rapidly restore some desire amongst his squad as they face a stiff challenge in midweek at home to Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League.
