Stoke sack Mark Hughes

Stoke have announced they have sacked Mark Hughes and started the search for his replacement.

The Potters were eliminated from the third round of the FA Cup by League Two side Coventry on Saturday to cap a miserable season for the club.

Stoke are currently in the bottom three on goal difference and the club’s board have finally ran out of patience with the Welshman.

“Stoke City can confirm that the contract of manager Mark Hughes has been terminated with immediate effect,” a statement read on the club’s official Twitter account.

“We would like to thank Mark for all he has achieved for the club over the last four and a half years, notably guiding us to three successive ninth places finishes in the Premier League, and we wish him every success for the future.

“The club will look to appoint a new manager as soon as possible and will be making no further comment at this time.”

Stoke are in the bottom three of the Premier League in January for the first time since 2009 and face a trip to Manchester United in their next match.

Only Swansea (14) have lost more Premier League matches than Stoke (12) this season, while the Potters have also conceded the most goals in the division (47).
