Newcastle sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder permanently
Newcastle have announced they have triggered a clause in Mikel Merino’s loan deal to sign the Borussia Dortmund midfielder on a permanent deal.
Merino joined Newcastle on an initial season-long loan deal at the start of the season, but Rafa Benitez’s side have moved to secure his long-term future after his impressive start to the campaign.
The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year deal until June 2022 after Newcastle triggered a reported £8m buy-out clause in their loan agreement with Dortmund.
“I’m really happy to be here, and for this part of the contract to finally be official,” Merino told the club’s official website. “I’m happy to be here for five more years and I hope to keep playing for this club and to give good things to all the people and the club.
“I have been focused on football always, but it’s good to know it’s now official and people will know it. I’m focused on my displays and improving myself, and I’m really happy to have signed this contract."
After starting the season as a substitute, Merino has leaped above Jonjo Shelvey in the pecking order for places in midfield and established himself as a key man for Newcastle.
Only N’Golo Kante has won possession in the midfield third as many times as Merino in the Premier League this season (both 35).
