Arsenal line up Chelsea target as Wenger successor

Arsenal are considering trumping rivals Chelsea to the appointment of Luis Enrique, as the Gunners gear up to replace Arsene Wenger this summer, reports the Daily Mail.

Wenger on Friday announced his decision to step down as Arsenal boss after 22 years at the helm, during which he transformed the Gunners into one of England’s best teams.

The north London side know they need to have a successor lined up sooner rather than later or run the risk of being left further behind by their top-6 rivals.

And Arsenal chiefs have reportedly lined up Enrique as the next Gunners manager, despite the Spaniard being linked with Chelsea.

Antonio Conte is widely expected to depart Stamford Bridge at the end of the season following the Blues’ limp defence of their Premier League crown.

Chelsea can still end the campaign on a high as they sit just five points behind Tottenham in the race for a top-4 finish and face Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.

Enrique, who has been out of work since leaving Barcelona last year, has been a top target for the Blues as they gear up to replace Conte, but could now be trumped by Arsenal.
