Manchester City eye Tottenham star as Kompany replacement
Manchester City are considering a move for Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld as a replacement for compatriot Vincent Kompany in defence, reports the Sun on Sunday.
Kompany sustained yet another calf problem while on international duty and missed his side's 5-0 win over Liverpool on Saturday, with the injury prone centre-back struggling for game time due to his ongoing issues.
Pep Guardiola is keen to give the City captain all the time he needs to prove his fitness, but the Spaniard is eyeing potential replacements for Kompany at the heart of the defence.
Alderweireld has now emerged as a possible target for City, with Guardiola considering another raid of Spurs for the 28-year-old.
The Belgium international is contracted to the north London side until 2020, but Spurs are keen to tie the defender down to a new long-term deal.
Should both parties be unable to come to terms on an agreement, City could make a move for Alderweireld next summer for a second successive raid on Mauricio Pochettino’s side after their big money signing of Kyle Walker earlier in the year.
