New Manchester United signing Fred suffered an ankle injury in training during Brazil’s preparations for the 2018 World Cup.
Brazil play Austria on Sunday in their final warm-up game ahead of the World Cup and Fred is unlikely to feature.
The 25-year-old reportedly sustained the injury in a tackle with Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro and Brazil are waiting to discover the extent of the blow.
“Tomorrow we watch to see what happens and then decide if we need to do any exams or not but at the moment it is too early to say anything about him,” Sky Sports quote Brazil’s national team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, as saying.
United announced an agreement with Ukraine giants Shakhtar Donetsk earlier this week, reportedly shelling out in the region of £50m for his services.
Jose Mourinho’s side will be sweating on the extent of Fred’s injury and hope it is nothing serious ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Fred is not expected to start for Brazil at the World Cup but it would be a blow to lose another player to injury ahead of this summer’s showpiece event.
Of the 34 players that attempted at least 25 dribbles in the Champions League last season, Fred had the best success rate (88.5%).
