RB Leipzig star signs new contract extension

RB Leipzig have announced star midfielder Emil Forsberg has put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension keeping him at the club until June 2022.

Forsberg, 25, has been one of the best players in the Bundesliga this season and his performances for the German surprise package has seen him heavily linked with a high profile move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The Sweden international was criticised for his decision to leave Malmo to join Leipzig in January 2015 but his progress has been startling and the second-placed team will be delightful to secure the long-term future of one of the Bundesliga’s best players.

“I am delighted that I have extended my contract for another year,” Forsberg told the club’s official website. “I feel absolutely right and appreciated and would like to achieve much with RB Leipzig. The club is ambitious and has a huge potential. I want to contribute my part to a continued successful future.”

Arsenal and Liverpool were just two of a number of Europe’s biggest clubs reportedly tracking Forsberg’s progress but they will seemingly need to look at alternative options with Forsberg committed to the Bundesliga club.

The Leipzig No.10 hasn’t featured since being sent off against Bayern Munich in the last match before the winter break but finished the first half of the campaign with a superb WhoScored.com rating of 7.56.

In fact, despite not featuring this year only Borussia Dortmund teenager Ousmane Dembele has registered as many assists in the Bundesliga this season than Forsberg (8).
