Villa sign former United goalkeeper

Aston Villa have announced they have signed former Manchester United goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini from Verona.

Gollini, 21, has spent the last two years in Italy and established himself as Verona’s first choice goalkeeper last season.

However, Verona finished rock bottom of Serie A and Villa have made the move to sign the highly rated Italian and handed him a four-year deal.

“I am very pleased to have brought in Pierluigi,” Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo told Villa’s official club website.

“We have managed to sign him despite the fact he was being chased by a number of top sides and that is a great sign.

“He’s a young man but has plenty of experience and I’m sure he’ll prove to be an excellent signing for the club.”

Of goalkeepers that made at least 10 appearances in Serie A last season only Ciprian Tatarusanu (61.8%) boasted a worse save success rate than Gollini (62.2%).
