Fulham poised to land Swansea defender Mawson

Fulham’s stunning summer of business looks set to continue with the Cottagers on the verge of signing Swansea centre-back Alfie Mawson, claims The Guardian.

The newly-promoted Premier League outfit announced the permanent transfer of Aleksandar Mitrovic from Newcastle on Monday evening and are now looking to strengthen their defence.

Slavish Jokanovic’s side are keen to hand Mawson with an instant return to the Premier League and have even agreed a deal with Swansea worth an initial £22m which could rise to as much as £27m.

West Ham were interested in signing Mawson earlier in the summer but dropped their pursuit in favour of signing defensive duo Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena.

Burnley, who are yet to make a signing this summer, still have an offer on the table for Mawson but the 24-year-old appears to have snubbed the Clarets in favour of a move to west London.

Mawson was surprisingly handed his first senior England call-up by Gareth Southgate during the international break in March but was an unused substitute against Italy and Holland.

The Swansea centre-back was one of only five outfielders that featured in every single minute of Premier League action last season.
