Everton midfielder James McCarthy is set for another extended spell on the sidelines after tearing his hamstring in training, reports The Daily Mail.
McCarthy, 25, had only just returned to full fitness from a hernia operation but is now facing a further three weeks out after breaking down in training.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman had already hinted at the fact McCarthy was on the verge of injury after lambasting Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neil for overusing him in the most recent international break.
The Irish midfielder will now miss upcoming league matches against West Ham, Chelsea and Swansea, as well as Ireland’s upcoming international fixture against Austria.
McCarthy has been a first-team regular for Everton since joining from Wigan in 2013, but has been limited to just two starts in the league this season. In the last four Premier League campaigns only Gareth Barry (295) has completed more tackles of all Everton players than McCarthy (262).
