Huddersfield set to break club-transfer record for Manchester City midfielder
Huddersfield are poised to complete a club-transfer record £10m deal with Manchester City to retain the services of Aaron Mooy, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Mooy spent last season on loan at Huddersfield after making the surprise move from Melbourne City to parent club City last summer.
The 26-year-old emerged as a key member of David Wagner’s squad that achieved promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs for the first time in their history.
Brighton are also interested in signing the Australia international but the Terriers are confident they will beat their rivals to Mooy’s signature by paying an initial £8m fee.
It is a huge statement of intent from the newly promoted side who have never spent more than £1.8m on a single player in their history as they bid to consolidate a place in the Premier League next season.
Despite never playing a single game for City, it is reported that Pep Guardiola's side have included a buy-back clause in the deal with Huddersfield and will also get a cut of any future sale involving the midfielder.
Only Christopher Schnidler, who was the club’s previous club record signing, (7.12) secured a higher WhoScored rating in the Championship last season than Mooy (7.06), while only Tommy Smith (10) registered more assists for Huddersfield (Mooy - 7).
Furthermore, no player won possession in the midfield third more times in the Championship last season than Mooy (229).
