Tottenham enter race for Manchester United target

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho will lock horns with former club Manchester United in the race to sign Inter veteran Diego Godin this summer, claims The Daily Mirror.

Godin only signed for Inter last summer after nine years at Atletico Madrid but has struggled to adapt to the demands of Antonio Conte.

The 34-year-old penned a three-year deal with Inter after his contract expired at Atletico but is now expected to leave the club after just 12 months.

United were interested in signing Godin before the Uruguay international was snapped up by Inter and are believed to still be interested now.

With Chris Smalling expected to complete a permanent deal to Roma and Phil Jones attracting interest from other Premier League clubs, United may require another centre-back this summer.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side can expect competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham and former boss Mourinho.

Tottenham's defence has been a point of real weakness this season and urgent upgrades are required, albeit a move for veteran Godin would raise eyebrows.

Mourinho could, nevertheless, have the edge over his former employers having managed Inter to the European treble earlier in his managerial career.

Godin has made just 12 league starts for Inter this season and is already below 20-year-old Alessandro Bastoni in the pecking order for places as the club's third centre-back.

In fact, Inter have won 76.9% of the league games Godin has not started in Serie A this season compared to a win rate of just 50% when he has started.
