Southampton defender heads to Serie A

Southampton have confirmed centre-back Maya Yoshida will see out the remainder of his contract on loan at Serie A side Sampdoria.

Yoshida has entered the final six months of his existing Southampton deal but has been told he will not be given a new contract.

The Japan international has spent the last seven-and-a-half years at Southampton but has fallen out of favour under Ralph Hassenhuttl this season.

Hassenhuttl has instead preferred a centre-back partnership of Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek for Southampton's stunning resurgence.

Yoshida's departure means Kevin Danso will not be leaving Southampton on deadline day, which the club were previously open to.

Danso joined Southampton on a season-long loan deal in the summer but has failed to make any impact at St. Mary's, most notably being sent off against Manchester United on his second league start.

After being a first-team regular in each of the previous three campaigns, Yoshida was reduced to just six league starts this term. He leaves Southampton with 154 appearances in the Premier League for the club.
