Jesse Lingard's thundering volley in the second half of extra time secured Manchester United their 12th FA Cup having overcome Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday evening.
It was a cagey affair for the most part of the final, which sprung into life with a little over 10 minutes to go with substitute Jason Puncheon firing past David De Gea after being teed up by full-back Joel Ward.
However, their lead lasted just three minutes as United responded superbly, with Juan Mata blasting past Wayne Hennessey from close range courtesy of a Ward deflection after an excellet run by captain Wayne Rooney to set up the chance.
The tie appeared to swing in favour of Palace after Chris Smalling became just the fourth player to be sent off in an FA Cup final having hauled down Yannick Bolasie to receive his marching orders from referee Mark Clattenburg.
Dwight Gayle was denied by De Gea as Palace pressed for a second, while at the other end, the unmarked Michael Carrick should have done better for United after glancing a header wide of Hennessey's post.
With the encounter evenly poised, however, Lingard was on hand to volley into the top corner past Hennessey from 18 yards with 10 minutes of extra time remaining after Antonio Valencia's low cross was clearled only as far as the 23-year-old on the edge of the area.
Palace pressed for the equaliser, with Mile Jedinak drawing a long range effort just wide of De Gea's post, but United held out for victory to secure domestic glory.
