Manchester United have announced Michael Carrick has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal extending his stay until the end of next season.
Carrick’s previous deal was due to expire this summer and there had been doubts whether he would be handed a new contract by Jose Mourinho after starting the season out of favour.
However, the 35-year-old, who will have a testimonial match at Old Trafford at the start of next month, has shown his qualities since then and still remains one of the best midfielders at the club.
“What a fantastic way to finish off the season, with a new trophy in our cabinet,” Carrick told the club’s official website. “I am delighted that my journey with this great club is going to continue.
“My focus is looking ahead to my testimonial match next Sunday; it will be a very proud moment for me and my family, and is the perfect way to top what has already been a great season. I am thrilled that the fans will also get to see our shiny new Europa League trophy on the day.”
Mourinho is expected to strengthen his midfield options once again this summer, which may diminish Carrick’s first-team opportunities next season, but the England international can still play a huge role for the club, particularly helping the clubs new generation with advice and his experience.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Michael over this past season,” Mourinho added. “He is one of the true professionals of the game. Not only is he a great footballer, he is also a fantastic human being and a great role model to our younger members of the team.
“I am delighted he has extended his contract and I would like to take this opportunity to wish Michael all the best for his well-deserved match next Sunday.”
United tended to play their best football with Carrick in the starting XI and his presence in midfield certainly gave the side greater stability, but too many of those matches ended in draws. In fact, United drew 50% of the 18 games he started in the Premier League, compared to just 30% when he didn’t feature in the starting XI.
