Manchester United ace Shaw in pole position for England recall

Gareth Southgate will name his England squad on Thursday for next month’s matches against Spain and Switzerland and Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is set to be included, reports The Daily Mail.

England play theif rist UEFA Nations League against Spain on September 8 before playing Switzerland in a friendly three days later, in what will be their first games since finishing fourth at the 2018 World Cup.

Gary Cahill and Jamie Vardy announced their international retirement on Tuesday and Southgate is poised to name another young squad after his vibrant Three Lions enjoyed a successful World Cup campaign in the summer.

Ashley Young was a star performer for England in Russia but the 33-year-old is also set to miss out on a place in Southgate's squad following limited game time for United this season.

The veteran defender is poised to be replaced by his club team-mate Shaw, who missed the World Cup but has shown some impressive early season form for United.

Jose Mourinho’s side have made a disastrous start to the season but Shaw, hasn’t featured for England since a seven-minute cameo against Germany in March 2017, has been one of very few positives for the Premier League giants.

Shaw, meanwhile, is United’s highest WhoScored rated player in the Premier League this season (7.32).
