Saints look to Liverpool to strengthen defence

Southampton will target out of favour Liverpool centre-back Mamadou Sakho in a bid to bolster their defence reports French publication L’Equipe.

Sakho has fallen out of favour with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and is yet to feature for Liverpool this season, with the centre-back expected to leave the club this month.

A return to France has been mooted, but Saints are now hoping to lure the Frenchman to the south coast before the close of the transfer window.

Saints were rocked by the news that Jose Fonte wants to leave the club in January after he handed in a transfer request, with the Portuguese centre-back linked with a move to Manchester United and Liverpool.

Sakho is keen to stay in the Premier League, which puts Saints ahead of Galatasaray, AC Milan and Inter in the race to secure his services, while West Ham, West Brom and Stoke have also been linked with a short-term move for the defender.

Saints boss Claude Puel can offer Sakho regular first team action at St. Mary’s, particularly if Fonte leaves this month, which would appeal to the former PSG man.
