Liverpool defender to miss the rest of the season

Liverpool defender Joel Matip has revealed he will sit out the rest of the season with a foot injury. 

The Cameroonian centre-back has been limited to just eight league starts this term through injury and picked up his latest knock in the 0-0 draw with Everton earlier this month. 

Matip sat out the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace last week and the 28-year-old believes his season is now over. 

"This season I will be not back on the pitch but for next season, I hope I’m going to be quite early a direct help for the team," he told the official Liverpool website. 

The Reds have nothing left to play for this season after they were confirmed Premier League champions last week on the back of Manchester City's 2-1 loss at Chelsea. 

Matip had impressed prior to a lenghty spell on the sidelines alongside Virgil van Dijk as his WhoScored rating of 7.29 suggests. 

However, he is now third choice in the pecking order at Anfield behind Van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
