Bayern Munich announce club-record deal for 2018 World Cup winner

Bayern Munich have announced they have agreed to sign Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez at the end of the season.

The Bundesliga giants have agreed an €80m (£68.2m) deal for Hernandez to make him the most expensive player in the club’s history.

Bayern broke their club transfer record to sign Corentin Tolisso from Lyon in 2017 but this deal far surpasses the €41.5m (£35.3m) spent on the midfielder.

Niko Kovac’s side have made overhauling their ageing squad a top priority at the end of the season and have also been linked with Chelsea teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Hernandez is a product of Atletico’s youth academy and Diego Simeone’s side have reluctantly been forced to cash in on the 23-year-old.

“Bayern are delighted to announce the signing of Lucas Hernandez on a five-year deal from July 1, 2019,” a statement read on Bayern’s official Twitter account.

Hernandez follows in the footsteps of his brother, Theo, in leaving Atletico after watching his sibling join rivals Real Madrid in 2017.

Bayern’s new signing, who has agreed a five-year deal to start this summer, can play at centre-back and left-back and his arrival will raise question marks about David Alaba’s future at the club.

Hernandez started all seven of France’s matches en route to winning the World Cup last summer but has only made 14 appearances in the league this season.
