West Ham to rival Everton for Premier League star

West Ham have entered the race to sign Swansea star Gylfi Sigurdsson but face stern competition from Everton, according to The Daily Mirror.

The Hammers are anticipating another summer of huge expenditure as they look to put behind what has been a thoroughly disappointing first season in their new stadium.

Slaven Bilic’s side look to have escaped relegation and can now start to plan for next season, with Sigurdsson among their top targets following what has been a sensational season for the former Tottenham flop in a poor Swansea side.

The Iceland international is also on the radar of Everton manager Ronald Koeman, who failed in his attempts to secure his services last summer and now any suitor can expect to pay north of £30m following his performances this season.

It’s a figure that would certainly be within reach for West Ham, who sold Dimitri Payet back to Marseille for £25m in January, although it remains to be seen whether Sigurdsson would be convinced to join the Hammers when Everton’s project is further along.

No midfielder has played a direct hand in more goals in the Premier League this season than Sigurdsson (19), while no player has registered more assists in Europe’s top five leagues this season (11).
