Chelsea need to pay £50m for Italy defender

Chelsea will need to shell out in excess of £50m if they want to sign Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has reportedly earmarked Bonucci as a top transfer target this summer as he looks to reinforce Chelsea’s defence.

The Juventus defender shone in Italy’s 2-0 win over Belgium in their Euro 2016 opener and is deemed by many as the best central defender in Europe at the moment.

Conte, who is currently in charge of the Azzurri, will need to pay a world record fee for a defender to lure the 29-year-old away from Juventus, a club he has supported since he was a boy.

Bonucci’s ability to go long was particularly evident against Belgium when he set up Italy’s first with a sumptuous ball over the top of the opponents’ defence for Emanuele Giaccherini to convert.

In fact, of players to have made at least 75 appearances in the last three Serie A campaigns, only two players have played more accurate long balls per game than Bonucci (6).
