La Galaxy confirm Cole capture

MLS franchise LA Galaxy have announced they have signed former Chelsea full-back Ashley Cole on a free transfer.

Cole, 35, has been without a club since being released by Roma at the start of the year and has been heavily linked with a move to MLS and a return to the Premier League.

The ex-England international had emerged as an outside transfer target for Manchester United amid their injury crisis at the back, but the left-back has joined the likes of Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane ahead of the 2016 season, which begins in March.

“Ashley is one of the world’s most successful defenders and has played at the highest level of competition throughout his career,” LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena told the club’s website. “He can provide our defence with valuable experience. We look forward to his contribution to our club this season."

Cole hasn’t played much competitive football since leaving Chelsea for Roma in 2014. In fact, his last competitive outing for Roma was at the start of March 2015 (vs Chievo).
