Manchester United set to hi-jack Chelsea’s £100m move for new striker

Manchester United have reignited their interest in Romelu Lukaku and are set to hi-jack Chelsea’s £100m move for the Everton striker, reports The Daily Mail.

Jose Mourinho’s side made an enquiry for Lukaku back in May but cooled their interest after being led to believe Chelsea were already in advanced talks to re-sign their former striker.

However, Chelsea have been reluctant to meet Everton’s world record £100m demands and United now believe they have a chance of prizing the Belgium international away from Goodison Park by using Wayne Rooney as a makeweight in a potential deal.

Rooney is in talks with Everton about making a sensational return to Old Trafford 13 years after leaving his boyhood club and Mourinho’s side hope to use the England captain as a bargaining chip to complete a world record move for Lukaku.

Mourinho was the manager that sold Lukaku to Everton in the first place but both manager and player have been on record in the past to say any differences between the duo have since been resolved.

However, United are also understood to be close to signing Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata and it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils would be able to convince two young strikers to join a side that only accommodates one out-and-out striker on the pitch.

In the last two Premier League seasons only Harry Kane (54) and Sergio Aguero (44) have scored more goals than Lukaku (43).
