Arsenal enter race for West Brom defender

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keen on making a move for West Brom defender Jonny Evans before the close of the transfer window, reports Sky Sports.

The Northern Ireland international is yet to feature for the Baggies this season due to injury, but has attracted interest from a number of Premier League suitors in recent weeks.

Manchester City are believed to be in pole position to land the 29-year-old centre-back, though West Brom did reject a £21m bid from Leicester on Monday, with the Baggies valuing the defender at closer to £30m.

Arsenal are now though to have entered the race to sign Evans, with Sky Sports reporting that an enquiry for the player has been lodged.

Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill has also admitted he won’t stand in the way of Evans should he need to leave their training camp to complete any potential move away from West Brom.

It remains to be seen whether Evans will leave the Baggies before Thursday’s deadline, however, with O’Neill hoping his future is resolved before the Northern Ireland national team flies to San Marino later this week for their World Cup qualifier.
