Chelsea star pens new long-term deal

Andreas Christensen has put pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half-year deal with Chelsea running until 2022, the club announced on Tuesday evening.

The 21-year-old has established himself as a central figure of Antonio Conte’s plans this season and has not looked out of place despite his tender age.

Christensen has always been tipped for big things by Chelsea and the Denmark international is now starting to show why the Blues rejected Gladbach’s attempts to make Christensen’s loan spell permanent back in 2016.

“The contract is reward for the excellent form Andreas has shown in the first half of the season,” club director Marina Granovskaia told Chelsea’s official website. “He showed immense potential when he signed for Chelsea in 2012 and is now enjoying the benefits of the dedication and professionalism he has shown since.

“After two seasons on loan in Germany we were convinced he was ready to be part of the squad this season and he has grasped the opportunity with both hands. We are delighted he has chosen to commit his future to Chelsea and we look forward to four-and-a-half more successful years with Andreas at the club.”

Christensen has been so impressive at the heart of Chelsea’s back three that David Luiz is now deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz played an integral part in the club’s title-winning campaign last season but has fallen out of favour under Conte this term.

Christensen boasts a better pass success rate (95.9%) than any other player in the Champions League this season.
