Southampton will consider Mark Hughes’ position at the club if they lose to relegation rivals Fulham on Saturday, claims The Daily Mail.
Hughes was appointed Southampton manager in March and successfully steered the club clear of relegation last season before being rewarded with a three-year deal in the summer.
Southampton were confident the club would kick on under Hughes this season but things have not gone to plan and now there could be a change of manager in the near future.
Southampton start the weekend above the bottom three on goal difference and Hughes’ job could be on the line in their relegation six-pointer away to Fulham on Saturday.
Fulham are the only Premier League side to sack their manager this season after axing Slavisa Jovanovic before the international break.
The Cottagers replaced Jovanovic with former Premier League winner Claudio Ranieri and will hope to benefit from new manager bounce this weekend.
A negative result against Fulham could leave Southampton in a perilous position with fixtures against Manchester United and Tottenham on the horizon.
Scoring goals has been a huge problem for Southampton this season, summed up by the fact only Huddersfield (6) have netted fewer times than Hughes’ side (8).
In fact, only Huddersfield have a worse conversion rate (3.9%) than Southampton (4.6%) in the Premier League this season.
