Marseille keen on Manchester City target

Marseille sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta wants to make Atletico Madrid starlet Theo Hernandez the club’s new left-back, according to L’Equipe, via AS.

Hernandez, the younger brother of Luis Hernandez, is currently out on loan at La Liga side Alaves and is due to stay their for the remainder of the season.

The 19-year-old has recently emerged as a long-term target for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, who is also keen on signing his older brother as he looks to bolster his defensive options.

However, City could now face a race to sign the France Under-20 international as Marseille weigh up a move for the teenager this month in their continued revamp of the squad.

Marseille have used different players at left-back in the league this season and appear not closer to knowing their best option in that position.

Atletico will not let Hernandez leave without a fight as they hope he can be the long-term successor for 31-year-old Filipe Luis. Marseille have also earmarked PSV Eindhoven full-back Jetro Willems as an alternative option should they fail to sign Hernandez.

Only two outfielders for Alaves have gained a higher WhoScored rating in La Liga than Hernandez (7.00). Furthermore, only Luis (36) has completed more dribbles of all defenders in La Liga this season than the Alaves loanee (27).
