Roma agree personal terms with Man Utd defender

Roma have moved a stepped closer to re-signing Chris Smalling after agreeing personal terms with the Manchester United centre-back, claims Gianluca Di Marzio.

Smalling spent last season on loan with Roma after being deemed surplus to requirements by United and the ex-England international was a huge hit in Serie A.

Roma are desperate to sign the 30-year-old on a permanent deal and have offloaded the likes of Aleksandar Kolarov and Patrik Shick to help finance a move.

Roma have now agreed personal terms with Smalling over his return and all that is left to do is agree a fee with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Smalling has two years left to run on his current United deal and the Red Devils are holding out for as much as €20m (£18.2m) for the towering centre-back.

Smalling made 30 appearances for Roma in Serie A last term and returned three goals and two assists for Paulo Fonseca's side.
