Manchester United have announced Sergio Romero has put pen to paper on a new four-year deal keeping him at the club until June 2021, with the option to extend for a further 12 months.
Jose Mourinho’s side expect Real Madrid to reignite their interest in current No.1 David de Gea and have moved to tie down Romero’s long-term future in case they are unable to keep hold of the Spain international.
Romero has spent the last two years at United after joining from Italian side Sampdoria in 2015 but really established himself as one of the best back-up goalkeepers in the Premier League last season.
“I am delighted to have signed a new contract,” Romero told the club’s official website. “Who wouldn’t want to be at the biggest club in the world? We have great goalkeepers here and we are always learning from each other.
“Of course, it was a very proud moment for me and my family to be part of the Europa League final, and I am looking forward to helping the team build on last season’s success in 2017/18.”
The Argentina international looked hopeless under Louis van Gaal when called upon during his first season at the club, but has really benefitted from Jose Mourinho’s appointment and even started the Europa League final against Ajax in May.
Romero made 18 appearances across all competitions for United last season and kept 12 clean sheets in the process. In fact, the Red Devils didn’t lose a single match when Romero started between the sticks.
