Wayne Rooney charged with drink-driving

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has been charged with drink-driving and will stand before a Stockport Magistrates’ Court on September 18, reports The Daily Mirror.

Rooney was stopped by police at 2am on Friday morning driving a VW Beetle near his home in Cheshire after allegedly spending the evening at a bar in Alderley Edge, reported to be The Bubble Room.

The 31-year-old, who retired from international football two weeks ago, was released on bail on Friday morning and will now appear in court a day after Everton are due to play Manchester United at Old Trafford later this month.

It would be the first time Rooney has returned to United since leaving Jose Mourinho’s side over the summer to return to Everton, but now his availability could be in doubt depending on how Ronald Koeman takes the news.

Rooney had made a promising start to life back at Goodison Park, scoring in each of Everton’s opening two Premier League games. In fact, the former United captain has scored all of Everton’s league goals this season.
