Juventus poised to sign Italian defender

Juventus have won the race to sign sought after defender Mattia Caldara but he will remain with Atalanta until 2018, reports Gazzetta dello Sport, via Football Italia.

Caldara, 22, has caught the eye of a number of clubs this season after making an impressive start to the season with surprise package Atalanta.

The Italy under-21 international was reportedly on the radar of Antonio Conte but the Chelsea manager has seemingly lost the race to his signature.

Juventus are keen to resolve a long-term replacement for 35-year-old Andrea Barzagli and have reportedly agreed to sign Caldara from Atalanta before loaning him back until the end of next season.

Caldara has not only proved an accomplished defender for high flying Atalanta, but he has also established himself as a threat in front of goal. In fact, no defender has scored more goals in Serie A this season than the Atalanta defender (3).
