Manchester United target extends Atletico Madrid deal

Antoine Griezmann has secured a bumper pay rise after extending his Atletico Madrid contract by a further year until 2022, reports MARCA.

The France international was expected to join Manchester United this summer only to backtrack on his decision after Atletico were unsuccessful in overturning a FIFA-imposed transfer ban.

Griezmann claimed it would have been a ‘dirty move’ to leave Diego Simeone’s side when they wouldn’t have been able to replace him and the La Liga giants have rewarded the Frenchman for his loyalty with a pay rise.

However, the 26-year-old’s release clause will remain at €100m (£88.3m) throughout the duration of his contract and that will give United and encouragement that they can rekindle a deal in 12 months time and finally bring Griezmann to Old Trafford.

In the last three La Liga campaigns only Lionel Messi (19) and Cristiano Ronaldo (13) have scored more goals from outside the penalty area than Griezmann (11).
