Tottenham defender Alderweireld set to miss out on Roma move

Roma are on the verge of signing Atalanta defender Gianluca Mancini spelling an end to their interest in Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, reports Gianluca Di Marzio.

Alderweireld is free to leave Tottenham for £25m this summer up until the final two weeks of the transfer window due to a clause in his current deal, which has 12 months left to run on it.

The Belgium international has already indicated he does not want to renew his contract with the club but there has surprisingly been a lack of suitors for the 30-year-old.

Roma had earmarked Alderweireld as a potential replacement for Kostas Manolas, who joined Napoli earlier this summer, and paused their pursuit of Mancini to sound out a deal with the Tottenham defender.

However, the stipulation in Alderweireld’s release clause is that the £25m must be paid in full straight away and his wage demands proved too excessive for Roma to afford.

The Serie A outfit have instead turned their attention back to Mancini and have agreed a season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy for €20m (£18m) next summer.

Mancini played a pivotal role in Atalanta securing Champions League football for next season and his displays were rewarded with his first senior Italy cap earlier this year.

Not only did the 23-year-old excel at the back for Atalanta last term, he also proved a huge goal threat for the Italian outfit. In fact, Mancini was the top scoring centre-back (five) in Serie A last season.
