International job awaits Mourinho after Manchester United
Portugal are ready to offer Jose Mourinho the chance to manage the national team if he leaves Manchester United, claims The Daily Mirror.
Mourinho has cut a frustrated figure during United’s pre-season tour and has lamented the club’s lack of action in the transfer window this summer.
The 55-year-old has entered this third season in charge of United and there are already signs this campaign could descend into chaos for the Red Devils.
Mourinho is in a strong position after signing a new contract earlier this year and sacking him would cost United millions.
Despite early elimination from the 2018 World Cup, Portugal are willing to stick with Fernando Santos for now after he led Portugal to a shock Euro 2016 triumph.
However, the Portugal Football Federation are monitoring Mourinho’s future at Old Trafford and would consider a move for the former Real Madrid boss if he leaves United.
Mourinho, who has previously been touted as a future England manager, has a desire to manage the Portuguese national team before he retires.
United finished last season without a trophy after losing the FA Cup final to Chelsea and they are already in danger of being left behind rivals Liverpool and Manchester City in the league next term.
Mourinho currently averages 2.06 points won per game at United. Of the the last five clubs he has managed at, only during his second spell at Chelsea (1.96) has he averaged fewer points won per game.
