Former Argentina international a shock contender for Leicester job

Former Argentina international Matias Almeyda has emerged as a shock contender for the vacant Leicester City job, claims The Daily Mirror.

Leicester announced their decision to sack Craig Shakespeare last week and have placed assistant manager Michael Appleton in temporary charge until they find his successor.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche is one of the frontrunners for the vacant post at the King Power Stadium, while former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has also expressed an interested in the job.

However, the Foxes are now understood to be exploring the possibility of handing Almeyda his first managerial job in Europe.

The 43-year-old, who played for Sevilla, Lazio and Inter among other clubs during a 20-year playing career, has spent the last two years managing Mexican side Guadalajara.

Almeyda’s side have only won two of their opening 14 league matches this season and they were bottom in the table prior to their 3-2 win away to Veracruz on Monday.

Since being appointed head coach of the Mexican side in September 2015, Almeyda has won 43.8% of his matches in charge.
