Sheffield United’s club-record bid for Championship striker falls short

Sheffield United have had a club-record £15m bid for Swansea striker Oliver McBurnie rejected, claims BBC Sport.

McBurnie has emerged as a top transfer target for the Blades, as the newly promoted Premier League outfit look to bolster their offensive options.

Swansea have already lost Daniel James to Manchester United this summer and now they are fending off interest from the Premier League for McBurnie.

The 23-year-old has spent the last four years at Swansea but the Scotland international was a revelation for the Championship outfit last season.

Sheffield United’s bid of £15m is around twice as much as they have ever paid for someone before but it is still not enough to prise McBurnie away from Swansea.

Chris Wilder’s side have broken their club-transfer record on two occasions already this month.

The Blades first did so in a deal to sign Luke Freeman from Queens Park Rangers and then surpassed that fee to land Callum Robinson from Preston over the weekend.

However, Sheffield United will have to return with an offer in the region of £20m if they want to convince Swansea to sell McBurnie.

The Swansea striker played a direct hand in 26 goals in 42 league appearances last season (22 goals, four assists) and won the WhoScored Man of the Match award on six occasions in that time.
