Manchester United announce arrival of Everton striker Lukaku

Manchester United have completed the biggest transfer of the summer after announcing the arrival Everton striker Romelu Lukaku on a five-year deal with an option to a further 12 months.

Lukaku was heavily expected to re-join Chelsea this summer but United have completed a dramatic swoop for the Belgium international in a deal worth a reported £75m.

The Belgium international has spent the last four years at Everton where he has developed into one of the best strikers in the Premier League, and he will now reunite with Jose Mourinho, who sold him from Chelsea in the first place.

“I would like to start by thanking Everton and the fans for the last four wonderful seasons,” Lukaku told United’s official website. “I have made some special friends and we have shared some amazing moments.

“However, when Manchester United and Jose Mourinho come knocking at the door it is an opportunity of a lifetime and one that I could not turn down. You could see the fight, determination and the spirt of this team during the Europa League final and I want to become a part of that.

“I cannot wait to run out at Old Trafford in front of 75,000 fans but before that pre-season is where the hard work stars and I am looking forward to that first training session.”

Lukaku was not officially included in United’s pre-season squad for America but is currently in Los Angeles with Untied midfielder Paul Pogba and will join up with the rest of the squad for training later today.

Only Harry Kane (29) scored more goals in the Premier League last season than Lukaku (25), while no player converted more clear-cut chances (18) nor did they score more goals from open play than the 24-year-old (21).
