Southampton poised to sack Puel after one season

Southampton will sack Claude Puel and begin the search for his successor after vice-chairman Les Reed completed the club’s end of season review, reports The Daily Express.

Puel is only 12 months in to the job after being chosen as Ronald Koeman’s replacement last summer but Southampton have endured a difficult campaign despite the fact the former Nice manager led them to the EFL Cup final in February.

However, Southampton’s progress in the league has stalled this season and now the club are in the process of negotiating Puel’s compensation package before they can officially announce his departure.

The Premier League outfit were hopeful Puel would save the club a lot of money by agreeing to take over as Saint-Etienne manager but after talks the 55-year-old opted against taking the job and now Southampton must pay him for the remaining two years of his contract.

Southampton finished with 17 fewer points this season than they did in Koeman’s last year at the club.
