Manchester United have announced Michael Carrick has signed a new one-year deal keeping him at the club until June 2017.
Carrick’s previous deal was due to expire this summer and there hadn’t been any talk of a new deal during Louis van Gaal’s time at the club.
However, new manager Jose Mourinho has made sure to extend Carrick’s United career into its 11th season.
“Michael is a very intelligent midfielder and a great reader of the game,” Mourinho told the club’s official website. “I am pleased that he will be extending his contract. His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever.
“Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me. I am really looking forward to working with him.”
Since August 2009, only Yaya Toure (7600) has made more sideways passes in the Premier League than Carrick (6237).
