De Gea wants Manchester United stay, claims Mourinho
Jose Mourinho has revealed David De Gea wants to stay at Manchester United and he is hopeful the club can secure his long-term future.
De Gea’s existing deal is due to expire at the end of the season but United have an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.
The Spain international has endured a rocky time between the sticks this season but produced a miraculous save in United’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Young Boys on Tuesday night.
De Gea barely had anything to do all night but saved United’s blushes late on with the game goalless before Mourinho hailed the 28-year-old the best goalkeeper in the world.
Mourinho has previously conceded his doubts whether De Gea will extend his stay at Old Trafford but is now hopeful on the situation amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.
“I know he wants to stay,” Sky Sports quote Mourinho as saying on Tuesday night. “I know his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know that the board wants him to stay and they are working on that.
“So hopefully, sooner or later, they arrive at a good conclusion. Without David’s save, there would be no winning goal. He’s the best goalkeeper in the world and if our ambitions are to be a big club, a winning club you need the best goalkeeper in the world.
“You also need some other best players [in their position] in the world, in this case we only have the best goalkeeper in the world.”
De Gea has only kept two clean sheets in 13 Premier League appearances this season.
However, only Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny (4) has kept more clean sheets than De Gea (3) in this season’s Champions League.
